Flushing Hospital Medical Center was recently the recipient of a generous grant in the amount of $92,164 by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which has supported Flushing’s Breast Cancer initiative for the past five years. This latest donation doubled the amount previously awarded.
Funds received from the grant have enabled Flushing Hospital to hire a full-time Breast Cancer Coordinator. This person is responsible for educating the community and making them aware of free screenings available to the locally under-served Chinese, Korean and South Asian women of Queens. As a result of the strong efforts by the hospital’s Breast Care Coordinator, many local community centers, churches and work places within the Flushing community have received information and many eligible women have utilized services at Flushing Hospital. In 2010, over 500 women were screened at the hospital, and as a result of those screenings, five lives were saved through early detection. Countless others in need received referrals for further treatment.
Thanks to the Susan G. Komen Grant, Flushing Hospital has been able to continue to fight the battle against breast cancer to those most in need within our Queens neighborhoods. We look forward to its continued success in the upcoming year and further helping the women of our community.
