The MediSys Emergency Management Department prides itself on its commitment to organizing community outreach efforts aimed at educating people about emergency preparedness. Just last month, their team conducted a presentation for over 450 students at P.S. 107, in Queens.
The 45 minute presentation, entitled “Are You Prepared,” challenged children to identify emergency situations. They participated in three interactive games where they had the opportunity to name different emergencies, identify various items in a go bag, and decide whether to stay in the house or get out of the house when presented with pictures of hazards. In addition, every student received a mini GoBag that included a FEMA activity book with instructions on how to design a family emergency plan and select an emergency meeting place.
“This has been my favorite presentation in the outreach program,” said Noel Kepler, Emergency Management Planner. “The kids were really excited and couldn’t wait to go home to talk to their parents about it. It’s a great way to make a big impact and we have a lot of fun doing it.”
In addition to the school presentation, the Emergency Management team has facilitated presentations at local community centers and board meetings in both Queens and Brooklyn on topics such as “Personal Preparedness” and “Severe Weather/Tornado Preparedness.”
The team also includes hospital employees in its educational efforts.
The Emergency Management team spent a week at each facility during National Preparedness Month in September, distributing information, speaking with employees, and promoting personal preparedness. During this time, several employees participated in a personal preparedness survey and as a thank you they were entered into a raffle drawing to win an emergency preparedness starter kit.
Congratulations to the following winners:
Anne Denicola— Administration, Flushing Hospital
Evelyn Batalia— Charge Nurse, Jamaica Hospital
