The Annual New York Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, held on October 17th, ended with financial gift to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Sharon Koehler, Director of the hospital’s Breast Health Services, accepted a check for $90,000 from Mark Hubert, Executive Director of the Avon Foundation for Women, and Suze Orman, Financial Expert and Special Ambassador for the Avon Foundation for Women.
The grant will help fund a full-time Community Social Worker/ Patient Navigator, who will provide breast health outreach and patient navigation services to Caribbean-American and African-American women, 40 and older, and at risk for breast cancer or diagnosed with breast cancer.
“The focus of the Patient Navigation program is to extend supportive services beyond medical care coordination to address the multitude of other barriers that impact care seeking behavior in minority women,” explained Dr. Koehler.
The Patient Navigator will help improve patient compliance with attending scheduled medical appointments and assist breast cancer patients obtain both the quality medical and supportive services that they need. With the addition of two new mammography units, the Patient Navigator will also aim to increase the number of Caribbean and African-American women who obtain breast health screenings.
