The Starlight Children’s Foundation is supporting Brookdale’s Pediatric Department as part of its Pediatric Hospital Support Program. The organization is providing the hospital with funding to benefit child life programs for seriously ill children at the hospital. They will provide $40,000 for a Child Life Specialist on the pediatric unit who will offer activities for children of all ages who are able to participate.
“We have been very fortunate that our patients have been the recipients of the Starlight Children’s Foundation's generosity,” said Dr. Kusum Viswanathan, Director of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Vice Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. Dr Viswanathan, who spearheaded the grant added "Our pediatric unit sees a very large number of traumas and chronically ill children and adolescents. By spending time in our Starlight playroom or engaging in an activity with our child life specialist, our young patients can forget, at least for a few minutes, that they are ill and hospitalized.”
