Marie Vilceus’ calm, professional demeanor enables her to work well with everyone with whom she comes in contact. Whether it’s a temperamental nurse, harried resident, irritable attending or midwife, or anxious family member, Marie maintains a distinguished bearing, caring heart, and calming presence in her interactions with them.

Marie Vilceus-Talty is this year’s recipient of the March of Dimes’ Maternal Child Health Perinatal Award of Clinical Excellence. Nominated by Lieberman for her exceptional work ethic and dedication, Vilceus-Talty was selected from one of four applicants for the exemplary care she provides to mothers and children, her advocacy work for maternal and child health issues and her demonstrated ability to innovatively meet the needs of her patients and staff.
“Marie was selected for the award for the totality of her excellent practice,” said Zola D. Golub, M.Ed., RNC, IBCLC, Chair of the March of Dimes award sub-committee. “The fact that the L&D unit has a 97% post-partum initiation breastfeeding rate, up from 15% prior to Marie's arrival on the unit is outstanding.”
Marie began her career as a nurse in 1986, dedicating seven years to Jamaica Hospital. She has become an integral part of the Labor and Delivery Unit since joining the staff. She steadfastly encourages mothers to breastfeed and has established several safety protocols. She is passionate about her position, truly committed to the work that she does, and completely humbled by the honor.
“Receiving notification that I won the award was a nice surprise,” said Marie. “I really didn’t realize that others recognized my zeal for maternal child heath and my unyielding effort to provide every mother and baby in our unit with the best possible care available.”
For Marie, it’s all about understanding and putting herself in other people’s situation—social intelligence as she defines it. She also makes sure that she is able to do what is requested of her staff and though work is difficult she aims to make it as pleasant as possible.
“Marie is a woman who was born to lead and teach others,” said Lieberman. “She is never afraid to ‘roll up of her sleeves’ and do whatever tasks need to be done.”
Marie was presented with her award on Tuesday, March 16, at the March of Dimes’ Perinatal Conference in New York City.
Congratulations Marie on such a notable achievement.
