As David Rosen, Brookdale’s President and CEO mentioned in his remarks during the medal ceremony at the 2010 Tribute Gala; “new decade – new venue;” and fabulous it was. Built in 1922-24 as the Greenwich Savings Bank on Broadway and Sixth Avenue at 36th Street, Gotham Hall opened its doors in 2002 as one of the most elegant catering halls in New York City. This is where on March 13, trustees, physicians, staff and friends of Brookdale paid homage to this year's honoree, Dr. Kusum Viswanathan, Director of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Vice Chair of the Department of Pediatrics.
Gotham Hall’s 120 foot ceiling magnificently decorated with stained glass created an ambiance of elegance and serenity, a perfect setting for a perfect evening. An evening that was full of respect, admiration and appreciation for a physician who becomes a role model for everyone who’s life she touches; professionally and personally.
Mr. Rosen thanked the attendees for their generous philanthropy. Proceeds are very appropriately earmarked this year for Brookdale’s Hematology/Oncology Services which include the Ambulatory Infusion Therapy Unit and Radiation Therapy.
The highest honor conferred by the hospital, the Brookdale Medal, and a plaque were presented to Dr. Viswanathan by Drs. Richard Fogler, Sr. Vice President and CMO and Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Dr. Myron Sokal, Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics. Both presenters spoke about Dr. "Vis" clinical and academic excellence as a physician, leader and teacher and the impact she has had on all the Pediatric Residents and all her patients over the years.
Unbeknownst to Dr. Vis, the Development Department was contacted by the principal of the High School for Public Service in Brooklyn where one of her patient's is a student. The student body decided to hold a fundraiser to benefit this very ill young man. However, he decided that he wanted the proceeds given to Dr. Viswanathan for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Department. Dr. Vis was elated when a check was presented to her by the principal and one of her student’s teachers. Also, in lieu of the traditional gift that is presented to the honoree, Dr. Alvin I Kahn, Chairman of the Board of Trustees presented Dr.Vis with a check for her unit.
Congratulations Dr. Viswanathan on a very well deserved honor. You are truly a pillar of the Brookdale Family!
