Mentoring Through Medicine Gets a “HIGH 5” from Media

Brookdale_logo2 Sapna Parikh, MD, Medical Correspondent for Fox 5 New York was so impressed upon hearing of Dr. Mary Baldauf’s program with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Mentoring Through Medicine that she decided to come and see it for herself.  She and her cameraman spent the entire morning filming Dr. Baldauf, the Pediatric Residents “bigs” and the kids “littles” in action.

By using SimBaby (a computer operated baby simulator), Dr. Baldauf demonstrated how to intubate and insert an IV. The local teens were taught how to use a defibrillator and give CPR to a baby, something that they could use to save a life, if needed.

Dr. Baldauf spoke eloquently during the 10PM Friday news story that quite often and quite favorably featured Brookdale and our dedicated staff. She reflected on the program and how it has so positively impacted not only the kids but also the residents. They know that they are making a difference and instilling in the children the desire and confidence to achieve success.  One of the pre-requisites to enter the program is be interested in the healthcare field.

PS 268 DONATES TO BROOKDALE

Brookdale_logo2 On June 18th, four graduating fifth graders from PS 268 and their teacher, presented a $750 check to Vito Buccellato, VP for Patient Care Services and Long Term Care, Dr. Lewis Marshall, Chairman of Brookdale’s ED, Mary Hayes, RN, Director or Nursing for the ED and other members of the staff.  This generous donation was raised through the school's Penny Harvest Campaign and will be utilized by Brookdale Hospital to purchase diversionary activities items for the children while they are being cared for in the Pediatric Emergency Department.

The children could have picked  any number of organizations as a recipient but ultimately chose Brookdale to receive the majority of the funds. Ps268 “The children of PS 268 decided to make Brookdale’s Pediatric ED the beneficiary of their campaign because many of them have been Brookdale ED patients and have witnessed first-hand how hard the doctors and nurses work to make them better,” said their teacher, Ms. Jackie Bataille-Kersaint

After the presentation, Ms. Hayes took the children into the Pediatric Emergency Room where they got to meet the doctors and nurses.  After their tour, the kids were treated to snacks and spent time sharing stories with members of the staff. A good time was had by all.

Flushing Hospital Receives Special Recognition From Korean Community

Flushing_logo2 On Sunday, June 24, one longtime fixture in the Flushing community honored another for their dedication to the people they both serve.

The Korean Won Buddhist Temple Association, celebrating its 33rd anniversary, chose Flushing Hospital Medical Center as this year's sole honoree.  The temple association recognized Flushing Hospital for its tireless efforts and generous contributions to their temple and the Korean community at large. Dr. Robert Crupi and Young Im Park accepted the award in front of over 300 people in attendance.  The event, which  was widely covered by the Korean media also featured a video presentation highlighting Flushing Hospital's achievements in the community.

Flushing Hospital is extremely proud of its most recent honor. With dedicated leaders such as Dr. Crupi and with hard work on the part of the Community Outreach Department, Flushing Hospital will continue to work hard to meet the needs of all the members of the community.
