Positive Outcome Follows Flushing Hospitals Unannounced JCAHO Survey

Flushing_logo2_4 On Tuesday Morning February 13th, a team of five surveyors arrived from the Joint Commission to begin an unannounced, comprehensive survey of all aspects of the Flushing Hospital Medical Center operation.

After four intense and grueling days we are pleased to report that Flushing Hospital Medical Center achieved a passing grade from the team, as reported in a wrap-up meeting late Friday afternoon with the survey group. Current surveys are Pass/Fail and no longer result in a number grade.

The comments from the team of surveyors after spending the better part of a week with our employees included the statements “they enjoyed interacting with our front line staff” and that our staff “displayed enthusiasm, openness and honesty.” They also stated that they wanted to “thank and praise everyone” and they commended the people that they interacted with.

That session was followed by a lighthearted update session for other staff in the hospitals auditorium, presided over by President and CEO David P. Rosen and Vice President and COO Bruce J. Flanz which was concluded by a traditional Champagne toast, courtesy of our Dietary department.

Mr. Flanz thanked all of the management and rank and file staff who rose to the occasion without any advance notice and performed in an exemplary fashion. Mr. Rosen echoed those sentiments and talked about what a difficult and demanding experience this new survey process is. He also reported how proud he is to hear how readily staff members at all levels stepped up and showed what they do well, not just when the survey team is here, but every day of the year. Both Mr. Rosen and Mr. Flanz also thanked the senior leadership that ushered the team around all week and helped guide the process.

As in any survey, there are some areas that we need to focus some additional scrutiny on going forward, and the surveyors also made several recommendations which we will review and which is an expected part of this educational process.

A well deserved congratulations to all!

Huge Budget Cuts in Health Care Looming

Medisys_logo_2_7 This year's state budget battle is shaping up to be the toughest in
recent memory, rivaling if not exceeding that of 1995-1996 when a
confluence of state and federal cuts decimated health care funding.

The cuts this year at the state level are enormous, totaling over $1
billion for hospitals and nursing homes.  In addition to the cuts,
Governor Spitzer is proposing redistribution of funds among health care
providers. Moreover, recently President Bush released his proposed
federal budget, which is expected to contain deep Medicare and Medicaid
cuts."

Our Network will be participating in the Albany Rally against the cuts being held on March 7 and we will continue to provide our employees with information updates and status reports on the budget issue in future Blog alerts.

Healthcare Advocacy Day in Albany

Medisys_logo_2_6 Employees and community members are planning their annual trip to Albany on Wednesday, March 7th to make our legislators aware of the financial issues facing the healthcare industry. This is an extremely important day because our elected officials need to be made aware of the devastating implications healthcare cuts will have on us all. Every hospital in the state sends representatives to this rally and we would like to have a large turnout from the MediSys Network.

There will be buses provided by each of our three hospitals. Buses depart promptly at 6:00 A.M. Breakfast is provided by the 3 hospitals at 5:30 A.M. and lunch is provided in Albany. Buses will return to their respective hospitals at approximately 5:30 P.M. For further information  on how you can join us for the rally please contact Ann Wilkinson at Jamaica Hospital (718) 206-7006, Phoebe Layne at Brookdale Hospital (718) 240-5716, and JoAnn Ariola at Flushing Hospital (718) 670-4434.

The Power of the Blog

Medisys_logo_2_5 MediSys is not the only business that has been bitten by the “blog bug”.  The Daily News will be launching a new health and medical blog entitled NYMD on its website in the next few weeks.

An “Advisory Panel” of expert physicians throughout the city will provide material on a regular basis on topics pertaining to their specialty. When a column is posted by an "expert", there will be a linkage to their affiliated hospital giving the reader the opportunity to learn about the hospital and the services provided at same.  Three MediSys physicians are on the panel including Dr. Shepard Splain, Chairman of Orthopedics and Dr. Sharon Koehler, Coordinator of Breast Health Services at Brookdale Hospital and Dr. Joseph A. Bosco, Director of Orthopedics at Jamaica Hospital.

NYMD will be able to be accessed at blogs.nydailynews.com/nymd.
