Flushing Hospital Medical Center Welcomes 300Millionth Person Born in US

Flushing_logo2 Whoever coined the phrase it’s a small world after all could not have been further from the truth. On Tuesday October 17, 2006, the United States welcomed its 300millionth human being.  Throughout NYC, hospitals staked a claim as to which one would take the title as the home of the 300millionth person born.

The contenders in this battle all had one thing in common- they were all born at 7:46am on October 17, 2006, which according to United States Census department was the estimated time of arrival for this milestone American. Born at exact 7:46 was Flushing Hospitals own Joana Palaguachi. Baby Palaguachi weighed in at 5 pounds, 6 ounces and was 19.5inches long. Maria Palaguachi was ecstatic to know that she could have given birth to the 300millionth American.  Joana, who is the first child born to Maria Palaguachi, is tied for the 300millionth slot with 2 other newborns delivered at New York Presbyterian, and Elmhurst Hospital.

In any case we welcome baby Palaguachi into the world and into the "Flushing Alumni" family.

Jamaica Hospital Medical Center: She's A Small Wonder

Jamaica_logo2_5If the best gifts come in small packages then indeed baby Faith Weaver is a very special gift. Weaver was born four months premature and weighed only 14oz at birth, thus making Faith the smallest baby ever cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.

Leaving the hospital recently for the first time since she’s been born, Faith Weaver arrived prematurely to mother Shanisha McCallister. Suffering from previous medical issues, Ms. McCallister developed further complications of her pregnancy forcing her to go into labor at only 23-24 weeks of gestation. Given her condition, doctors decided to deliver the baby despite her being 4 months premature. Baby_mccalliste_2 On March 9, 2006 Faith Weaver was born weighing only 390grams. Though mom was doing well and was discharged a few days after giving birth, baby Faith had a much longer stay of 172 days and finally was able to leave the hospital to be with her with her mom. No longer weighing under a pound, Faith now weighs in at at over 5lbs.

Dr. Ajey Jain, Director of Neonatology at Jamaica Hospital says “Faith is truly a miracle child. She’s the smallest baby we have ever birthed and she has made a remarkable recovery. Thanks to the staff of the NICU Faith is now a happy healthy baby”. Dr. Jain is expecting Faith to grow to normal height and weight over the next few months.

Jamaica Hospital Goes International

Jamaica_logo2_2

Jamaica Hospital’s own Andrew Rubin, D.P.M spent yesterday presenting to an audience at the United Nations on the dangers of Diabetes and its affects on the extremities. There are over 7000 people employed at the United Nations New York Headquarters, many of whom are either affected by the disease or know someone who is.Drandrewrubin

For over 10 years Andrew Rubin, a Podiatrist at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Chairman of the Queens Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, has worked to empower patients with information about Diabetes. As a chronic disease, it affects many other parts of the body, causing tingling, numbness, and impaired wound healing in the feet. If diabetes is not properly cared for, infection can develop leading to amputation of the extremity.

“Presenting at the United Nations was a remarkable opportunity. Working in one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the country, Queens is a microcosm of the United Nations and what it represents.” says Dr. Rubin. Diabetes affects millions both young and old and of every ethnicity. It’s important that we educate and promote awareness of its debilitating affects.
